How to join

The Sons of Confederate Veterans

Membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans is open to all male descendants of any veteran who served honorably in the Confederate armed forces.  Membership can be obtained through either lineal (you are a blood descendant of the veteran; grandson, great grandson, great great, ect) or collateral (you are not a direct descendant of the veteran but you share a common ancestor; great uncle, great great uncle, 3rd cousin, ect).  Family lines and kinship to a veteran must be documented genealogically.  The minimum age for full membership is 12, but there is no minimum for Cadet membership.

Applicants should submit an application form, along with a detailed genealogy describing your relationship to the veteran and proof of his service.

To obtain proof of his service, you can:

  1. •  Contact the state archives from which the soldier fought and obtain a copy of the veteran’s military service record.

  2. •  Check the states pension records of the veteran or his widow.

  3. •  Contact the Alabama state SCV genealogist Harold A. Bouldin at hbouldin@farmerstel.com

  4. •  Or contact a local camp near you for help by checking out alscv.org for a list of camps in your area.

Please note that finding someone listed in the Broadfoot Roster with the same name as your ancestor does not constitute proof (John Jones from Alabama).  You must use accepted standards of genealogical research to demonstrate that the two men are, in deed, the same.

The SCV has a network of genealogists to assist you in tracing your ancestor’s Confederate service.

Quotes by:   Thomas Jefferson

•When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe.

•My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.

•The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first.

•I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

•To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.

•The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.

•It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.

•No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.

•The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.

•The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it.

•Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.

•Those who surrender freedom for security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.

•The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

•When people fear the government there is tyranny, when the government fears the people there is liberty.

•We in America do not have government by the majority.  We have government by the majority who participate.

•If ignorance is bliss, why aren’t more people happy?

•The man, who reads nothing at all, is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers.

•Upon the alter of God I pledge eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.

•I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies.  If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by  deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks, will deprive the people of all property - until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.
